歌詞の意味と曲の解説
ヘンリー・ローリー・ビショップ(Henry Rowley Bishop)が作曲したイングランドの民謡で、 シチリア民謡から曲の着想を得たと言われています。埴生は「はにゅう」と読み、「埴生の宿」は「みすぼらしい家」という意味です。 「埴」は、埴輪の原料となる黄色い土の一種のことで、「生」は、一面にあるという意味です。なので、「埴生」は、黄色い土が一面にある、ということになります。
原題は「Home! Sweet Home!」です。 日本では、「ホーム・スイート・ホーム」や「楽しき我が家」という名称でも知られています。 歌詞は里見義による訳詞を掲載しています。英語の原詩と大意は変わらないように思いますが、逐語訳ではありません。
